Yoshinori Kitase, the director of Final Fantasy VIII was recently interviewed by Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu. They asked for a reason why many classic remasters of FF titles were announced in the past year but FFVIII was missing from the list. Famitsu also brought up the fact that it was previously reported that original game files from FFVIII were missing and lost.

Kitase answered that they were planning to originally just port the PlayStation 1 version of FFVIII but then decided against doing that because of the 20th anniversary of the game and felt that it deserved special attention. He also mentioned that most of the original staff is still at Square Enix so the team worked on some character redesign upgrades to various models and backgrounds in the game so it would look good transitioning from the original game meant for CRT SDTVs to modern LCD HDTVs

No news on an official release date yet but it should be arriving sometime later in 2019.
