The YouTube channel Super Bunnyhop which is run by game journalist George Weirdman, uploaded a video this past week discussing a cancelled Final Fantasy game called Project W which was being developed by Eidos Montreal. So after the huge success of their game Deus Ex Human Revolution one of the producers started working on an RPG project. Apparently Square Enix back in 2011 was so impressed with Deus Ex Human Revolution they allowed them to use the Final Fantasy name for this new project.

The reason Square Enix gave them the ability to make a game with the Final Fantasy name was because FFXIII and FFXIV both performed badly in terms of reviews and poor sales initially. They were looking for something different that would appeal to modern audiences. So they began development on a main series Final Fantasy game nicknamed Project W.  After some development time a studio rep flew to Japan in 2012 to explain the plot of the game which was a scifi space opera and Square Enix did not like what they heard so the game was softly cancelled in 2013. Eidos continued to work on the project under a different name but then development for that project was eventually cancelled as well.

It would have been interesting to see if this game would have ended up being Final Fantasy XV or XVI.
